In recent years, there has been a shift from people pursuing their luxury homes in the city, to moving out into areas like Caledon, where the vast, beautiful landscapes and added privacy that comes from nature adds a presence to the home that you can’t find in the city.

“You get so much more value for that cost of a home out here, versus inside the city,” explained RE/MAX agent Tav Schembri. “In the city, the home will still be on a lot size, with neighbours all around you. These sort of luxury homes are very private. A lot of them, you can’t even tell from the road who lives at the end of the driveway.”

A lot of the luxury homes Mr. Schembri has seen, or helped sell, in the area come with large windows and are private in nature, which allows nature to become almost a part of the home.

“There are so many spectacular views; things that you could not even come close to experiencing in the city,” he said. “We have one home we are selling right now that is quite impressive. It’s on a 25 acre lot, gated, with ponds and a vast natural environment, as well as an in-ground, indoor pool.”

While Mr. Schembri’s team focuses on selling development properties and farms, along with luxury homes, he explained that they’ve been making a shift towards more of the latter, because that’s what the market demands right now.

“Caledon is becoming a really high end location,” he said. “There are a lot of people looking from the GTA to come to Caledon, because of the accessibility to get down to the city. They’re looking at an area that’s really comfortable, has a lot of natural features, and is accessible to the GTA.”

He added that with many high quality schools and having been named one of the safest communities in Canada two years in a row, there is a lot of appeal for people looking to get out of the city environment.

Selling luxury homes however, can be a difficult market, as buyers and sellers alike need to know that they can trust and rely on their agent to serve them as best as possible. For Mr. Schembri, this has been a market that he has a leg up on – not only because of his 25-30 years being involved in the business, but because his family has something many of the city real estate agents don’t: first-hand experience living in the area.

“I grew up in the Caledon area, but I’ve also raised my family here,” he said. “They’ve gone to the schools in the area, and we’ve been here more than 30 years. So we know the area. We know its features and its highlights.”
